Grief Wellness Workshops

Engagements for Colleges & Universities

Did you know...

A comprehensive analysis of studies related to bereaved college students found that about one- third of college students are in bereavement at any given time Balk (2008). Research also indicated that 30% to 36% of students report a loss within the first 12 months of their academic study (Balk et al., 2010; Cox et al., 2015), and 37% to 44% experience a loss within 24 months (Cousins et al., 2017; Cox et al., 2015). Overall, 60% of college students report having lost at least one person close to them by the end of their academic career (Cox et al., 2015).

Unfortunately, this research is not inclusive of the compounded grief that students are experiencing post-pandemic. And at a time when they are forming their identities and social spheres, they need resources to help them cope.

The absence of grief wellness programs on university campuses can lead to several significant costs, both tangible and intangible.

It’s not “if” grief will affect your student population, but “when”. And the time is right now.

Recognizing this need, Mourning Flow can curate a Grief Wellness Workshop that will help you offer innovative resources to pro-actively address grief-related issues.

Grief workshops on University campuses can offer several benefits to students:

  • Emotional Support: Workshops provide a brave space to express emotions and receive support from peers and trained facilitators

  • Coping Skills: Grief workshops teach practical coping strategies and techniques to manage emotions during difficult times. This can include mindfulness practices, journaling, relaxation exercises, and methods for dealing with stress

  • Normalization of Grief: Sometimes students may feel isolated or ashamed of their grief reactions. Workshops help normalize the grieving process by showing that it is a natural response to loss and that others are experiencing similar feelings

  • Community and Connection: Attending workshops allows students to connect with others who are going through similar experiences. This sense of community can reduce feelings of loneliness and provide a supportive network

  • Improved Academic Performance: Dealing with unresolved grief can significantly impact academic performance. By addressing grief through workshops, students may experience improved concentration, productivity, and overall well-being

  • Long-Term Resilience: Learning healthy ways to cope with grief at a young age can build resilience that lasts a lifetime. These skills can be invaluable in navigating future challenges and transitions

Modalities utilized may include: Breathwork, Journaling, Guided Meditation, Yin and Restorative Yoga, Soundbath, Educational Lectures, Experiential Exercises, Death Over Dinner style formats, etc.
