Death with Dignity

California's Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) legislation empowers terminally ill adults with the autonomy to make their end-of-life choices.

Enacted in 2016 and updated in 2022, the End of Life Option Act (EOLA) allows mentally competent patients, with a prognosis of six months or less to live, to request a prescription for aid-in-dying medication. To qualify, patients must make two oral requests at least 48 hours apart, along with a written request and consultation with a second physician. This compassionate legislation provides individuals with the option to peacefully and comfortably end their suffering, surrounded by loved ones, ensuring a dignified farewell tailored to their personal beliefs and wishes. The process can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks.

The inherent respect for personal agency and the acknowledgement of the intrinsic human right to die with grace and autonomy make MAID a cornerstone of compassionate care.
